There is hardly a Bulgarian, who doesn't know the legend of Cape Kaliakra about 40 Bulgarian girls, who preferred to tie their hair together and jump into the Black Sea instead of being captured by the Ottomans. Cape Kaliakra is a long and narrow headland in Dobrufhza region, northern Bulgaria Black Sea coast. An obelisk dedicated to the 40 maidens is put up at the entrance of the medieval fortress, which was the last residence of Despot Dobrotitsa.
