Ahtopol

The small town of Ahtopol is situated 87 km south of Bourgas, close to the border with European Turkey. The beautiful mouth of Veleka River is just 4 km south of the resort. Ahtopol is set on a small rocky peninsula that is 500 m long and 300 m wide. The mouth of Veleka River offers two long and picturesque beaches.     Location

    The small town of Ahtopol is located 87 km south of Bourgas and 14 km southeast of Tsarevo resort, close to the border with European Turkey. The mouth of Veleka River is 4 km south of the resort.

    Ahtopol lies on a rocky peninsula (500 m long, 300 m wide).

    Beach and climate

    The mouth of Veleka River provides 2 long picturesque beaches. The sea water is more placid and warmer (approximately 25 °C) here. Secluded beaches are perfect for nude bathing.

    The climate is excellent for a beach holiday here – there are a lot of long summer days cooled by the breezes from the Strandzha mountains. The average July temperature here is 22-23°C.

    South to the border with Turkey holidaymakers will find beautiful beaches of Silistar, Sinemorets and Rezovo.

    History

    Ahtopol is an ancient city, known to the ancient Greeks as Agatopolis (City of Happiness). Today Ahopol is a quiet town popular among Bulgarians, Russians, Czechs, Macedonians, Slovaks.

    In the past Ahtopol was a Thracian settlement. Later on the Romans the town was called Perontikus. The now existing town was rebuilt after a huge fire in 1918 when everything was destroyed.
    Some very ancient coins were found near Ahtopol, including emissions, coin-aged in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and from nearly all European countries.

    Entertainment

    The mouth of Veleka River is located 4 km from Ahtopol. Close to it is situated the small village of Kosti famous for the Nestinarski dances.

    The village of Varvara is situated 3 km from the resort. It is a favorite place for divers, because of the reefs and stone underwater cavities.

    Ahtopol is a place for tourists who want a holiday in a desolated site among virgin nature.

    In close proximity to Ahtopol is situated the Strandzha mountain and Strandzha Nature Park. There are diverse in length and difficulty walking and biking trails in the mountain.

    Interesting sites are the Assumption Church and St. Yane monastery.

    Transport

    The resort offers regular bus and minibus transport to Bourgas (passing through the villages and towns in the southern part of the coast) and Sinemoretz and Rezovo (the tiny village on the closed Turkish border) to the south.
