Dark Centuries in the Rocks

Aladja rock monastery near Varna hosts exhibition of 14 icons from the Regional History Museum in Kardjali. The icons date back from 16 – 18th centuries and exhibit part of the rich history of the eastern part of the Rhodope Mountain. The exhibition is opened for visitors until 15th September. The valuable antiques are from the “St. Atanassi” Church in Byalopolyane village and from “St. George” church in Drabishna village. The oldest icon form the exhibition depicts “St. Joan Precursor”, dating back from 1592. All icons are restored, preserved and included in the temprorary exhibition in the museum in Kardjali. According to the research-worker Teofana Matakeva, the icons reveal the development of icon painting from the 16th century to the Revival period. According to her, most of them carry the signs of the Etropole Icon Painting Centre.
