Our family (age range 2 to 60) went to "Sunny Beach" in May 2005 to celebrate my 60th birthday. We don't normally do beach holidays, and didn't know what to expect, especialy after reading comments on the internet comparing "Sunny Beach" with Blackpool (which we loathe). But "Sunny Beach" exceeded our expectations. It's certainly a huge cut above grotty Blackpool. We had a fabulous time. Bear in mind that we went at the start of the season when it was reasonably quiet. We can envisage that later in the summer "Sunny Beach" will be crowded and noisy. Three things really impressed us: (1) How clean the hotels, bars, restaurants & shops were + the litter free streets (putting many UK seaside resorts to shame) (2) The variety & quality of meals in all the bars and restaurants that we visited - at incredible low prices (compared with the UK) (3) How friendly and welcoming were the Bulgarian people that we encountered working in the hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. They really love it if you can greet or thank them in Bulgarian (so try and learn a few Bulgarian words and phrases before you go). Our family were accommodated in three hotels - "Victoria Palace", "Globus" and "Korona" (travelling with Balkan Holidays). We were all impressed and extremely satisfied with our accommodation, and had no complaints. We did overhear some English guests complaining that the hotels didn't provide "English" food. But this typifies the arrogance of many English tourists. When we go to Bulgaria, we don't want to be served "roast beef and Yorkshire pud" or "fish & chips" ~ we prefer to sample traditional Bulgarian cuisine (or "English" dishes cooked Bulgarian style). There was so much choice of food in the three hotels our family stayed at that none of us ever went hungry! For a good family evening out we recommend: (1) "Khan's Tent (a great Bulgarian meal & circus style cabaret) (2) "The Tropicana" - opposite the "Globus Hotel" (this is where I celebrated my 60th Birthday - the band there is brilliant - they're called "Helter Skelter") (3) The club on the promenade (I forget the name)where you can enjoy a nightly free Bulgarian folklore floorshow and firedance. And with a pint of draught beer costing as little as 38p, and spirits (doubles) or a cocktail for less than Ј1, you don't need the excuse (like mine) of a 60th birthday to go out and CELEBRATE!!
