While in Sunny beach it came to my attention that people who have an accident or fall ill are being taken to the private hospital in Sunny Beach A young boy who i assisted was taken there with a broken toenail and they took it off and charged the lady 500 euros for it. Another lad had sunburn and he was taken there and he was charged 400 pounds to put a bandage on and was told his insurance didnt cover it. i thought if you had a e111 form you were covered like the uk but it looks like there are taking people to local private centres to get treatment.

Mark, this is another scam of theirs, Now you talk of the e111 form, I trust you mean the new EHIC, with the new card, it will only offer the equivalant service as in UK, but to get it can be hard to find. I always advise a little extra on the insurance to cover all eventualities. Cheers. Tonyt

Im afraid these scams are world wide, they over medicate, take you to private centres, and as Tony states E111 is now EHIC,and check your insuance policy

Well when I fell ill in Sunny Beach I was taken to the medic centre and remained there under 24 hour supervision for 10 days. They worked on me day and night to get me better with limited resources but an abundance of care. My diabetes had gotten well out of control and as it was an existing problem and partly due to my own bad management it would not have been covered by my medical insurance. My blood sugar with should read about 5.0 was over 40! The staff there were just brilliant and the head of the hospital said he would put it down as a virus so I would be covered by my insurance. If he had not done that it would have cost me thousands - so lets not paint everyone in Bulgaria with the same brush! I certainly without doubt owe my life to them.

Cool

Well im sure there are a lot of scams this year. As i say i know of 2 people who were taken to private care in Sunny beach. Can you request to go to a hosptal that recognises a EHIC or are the hotels and private hospitals in it together. The sign outside the fenix says it does not cost you if you need treatment depending on your insurance. What is the point of the EHIC card if you cannot use it. I thought Bulgaria were in Europe so how can they get away with these scams

When we were in Palma Nova my young son had severe tonsilitis and we had to call the doctor in we were rushed to a private hospital and because we had gold cover insurance we didn't have to pay a penny. But we saw a lot of people forking out money while we were there.

I had no problem in Bulgaria when I sprained my ankle and went to the medical centre on site, they took me by ambulance to a clinic in SB for x-ray and gave me the best care back at the centre and I had to go every day for 5 days to have my bandage changed. I had insurance and all I had to pay was the excess.

You might want to edit this out, you've just admitted making a false claim on your insurance!!!!!!!!!!! It's called fraud.

The Policlinic in Sunny Beach is a private concern and I also believe the new hospital is private as well. Owned by a businessman from Sofia, I was told.
When I needed attention, for an allergy some years ago...just like JJ, I paid the excess on my travel insurance and the clinic claimed the rest direct from the insurance company. Would not entertain me until I produced the policy though.

Well

Old posters on his site know about my sons accident. Because his injuries were so bad (fractured skull and broken arm) he ended up in Bourgas hospital. The staff were brilliant and so was the insurance company rep who came and translated and sorted all the bills out, all we paid was £50 excess when we left the hospital after 1 week.

We certainly were grateful for the care we received. This was before the new private hospital was built though , hopefully will not have to see the inside of that one.
