Sofia Airport has also amended its security regulations to accommodate the new requirements. During flights all civilians’ luggage must be limited in terms of number, size and weight. Therefore it is recommended that upon purchasing a plane ticket passengers familiarize themselves with the general terms and conditions of luggage transportation as defined by their air carrier of choice, because the rules differ depending on the company and flight destination. The restrictions apply for checked luggage as well as carry-on (hand) luggage. It is of paramount importance that passengers be familiar with the types of items, the air traffic of which is prohibited. Luggage should not contain explosives of any kind. Liquids, creams and gels in carry-on luggage are limited to 100 ml containers, packed together in a transparent sealed bag. Their total volume must not exceed 1 liter. Passengers taking medication must carry it in original packages and it must not exceed the amount needed for the duration of the flight. Moreover, they must present a prescription or medical certificate for all medication and devices necessary for its administration. All kinds of firearms, toy guns, bows, harpoons, slingshots and sharp or dull objects carrying a safety risk are prohibited on airports grounds and on the plane. Each piece of luggage undergoes meticulous security checks, both by means of X-rays and manually. If the owner is suspected of carrying forbidden items his luggage is inspected by an authorized person in his presence. Border Police staff conducts security checks of the luggage at Sofia Airport. Passengers are required to cooperate and fulfill the staff’s requests, aimed at ensuring the safety of air transport. Passengers can acquire useful information and advice regarding the restrictions and bans on luggage content from their air carrier or travel agency upon buying a ticket, as well as on the websites of the airports along their flight route.
