In the past Ahtopol was a Thracian settlement. Later on the Romans the town was called Perontikus. The now existing town was rebuilt after a huge fire in 1918 when everything was destroyed.
Some very ancient coins were found near Ahtopol, including emissions, coin-aged in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and from nearly all European countries.
Entertainment: The mouth of Veleka River is located 4 km from Ahtopol. Close to it is situated the small village of Kosti famous for the Nestinarski dances.
