The botanical gardens of the summer residence of the former Queen Marie of Romania are a delight with a myriad of flora.
The exotic animal dispaly in the gardens is upsetting as some of the animals (the rodents and rabbit) were not well-cared for.

Spent 4 days in Balchick in March 2004, after travelling around Bulgaria for a week. It certainly has a quiet charm about it and in a few years it could be a very desirable place to live if some european money is invested there. Pity there's no real beach, but the laid back feel of the place would suit anyone looking for a peaceful holiday. There's only a few bars and places to eat, but if you look just off the promenade there are a couple of really good restraunts. Some building work was going on during my stay, mainly on the area along and around the sea-front, but looked as if it should be finished before the start of the season. Not really a place to stay for a whole week, but if like me you use Balchik as a base for exploring the surrounding area, it is a nice place to come back to after a day on the road.

I Went 4 time in bulgaria. 2 time for work and 2 time for holidays. During those weeks (about 15 week i think) i've traveled in the major part of bulgaria and for me the place that let me the best "souvenir" is Balchik (pronounce Baltchik, no?).

I was alone for 3 days in this town in the late days of june 2000 and i was perhaps the lonely tourist in the town.

I found an old and little hotel in the center with an old women trying to talk to me in many foreign language as i was trying to speak in bulgarian... The sea was hot and beautiful. People were peaceful, but not as peaceful as the beautiful garden upon the sea where i stayed for hours and hours.

For me Baltchik is definitely the best place to stay if you want to be calm, cool and to forget your problems!!!!
