Vidin

Vidin is a port town situated in the Vidin Lowland on the southern bank of the Danube river in northwestern Bulgaria. It is located about 190 km northwest from Sofia, close to the borders with Serbia and Romania.     Location

    The town of Vidin is located in the Vidin lowland on the southern bank of the Danube river in northwestern part of Bulgaria. It is a port town situated about 52 km north from Belogradchik and 190 km northwest from Sofia. Vidin is close to the Romanian and Serbian borders. The Danube River is a natural border between Vidin and the Romanian town of Kalafat. Both towns are connected by Danube Bridge II and by a Ferry.

    Entertainment

    Vidin's main landmark is the Baba Vida fortress built in the period of the 10th - 14th c. It is the only completely preserved fortification in Bulgaria. Its foundations were laid at the end of the 10th c. on top of one of the towers of the ancient town of Bononia. Its outlook was completed in the 14th c., when it was a castle of one of the last Bulgarian kings before the Ottoman rule.

    In addition, Vidin offers other interesting sights, such as the Ethnographic museum Krastata Kazarma , the Turkish konak (police office) which was transformed into an Architectural museum, the Art gallery, the library of Osman Pazvantoglu, the Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Theater.

    Something not to be missed is the town of Belogradchik (45 km from Vidin). The Belogradchik Rocks (the famous natural phenomena) and the medieval Belogradchik fortress are located close to the town of Belogradchik.

    The Magura cave is another important attraction in the region that is one of the biggest Bulgarian caves with a total length of 3000 m.
    The Rabisha Lake is located next to the Magura cave. It is the biggest inner lake in Bulgaria. The lake is suitable for picnics, fishing and water sports.

    A major part of the region of Vidin is covered by the massifs of the western Balkan Mountain Range (Stara Planina) suitable for trekking tours.

    Trips on a cruise boat along the Danube River, a visit to the neighbouring Romanian town of Calafat, one day excursions and shopping tours to the nearby Serbian towns of Zajecar and Negotin are offered in Vidin.
