(---.bb.sky.com) posts : 43 Date : 08-24-10 14:39 Back yesterday from our umpteenth holiday in Old Nessebar. Got there after a delay of 11 hours because of a mechanical repair - started motor replacement - that needed doing but what can you do? Not create a scene, obviously, but the person who did provided much-needed entertainment for the other passengers in the departure lounge and was, frankly, lucky to get on the flight. Everyone got £10 in vouchers in total, not sure what more Servisair could have done, as they gave us info when they had it. Anyway, to the resort - lovely as ever, with THE hottest weather we've had there, particlarly during our first week. We stayed at the St George Hotel again, lovely views across the bay. Booked it independently and have only good things to say about it. Saw a disappointed customer create a scene and get nowhere at the change shop just at the entrance to Old Nessebar - steer clear if you're going. Also, there's a booth that should be avoided opposite the post office, just up from the Crown Exchange and, to be honest, the Unicredit bank in the town gives a poorer rate than others as well. Went to New Nessebar beach most days - sea clear, warm and safe. Only downside was seeing the odious man with the poor, probably drugged, reptiles. He's only in business because people who should know better pay for photos - shame on them. Restaurant recommendations in Old Nessebar - the Gloria Mar at the harbour is fab, fantastic fresh seafood and great service. The Taverna, on a corner near the clock tower just past the centre of the town, is also worth a mention - lovely people and nice tasty food - their "fresh chips" are great, v thinly sliced and crispy and the courgettes are fab. It's very new, so best to take some Diet Coke in with you, they won't mind! Another new place, Cacadau, just down from the square where the Zornitza/Sevina restaurants are, was also very good with friendly staff and great food - the chicken skewer shashlik was enormous! In New Nessebar, the first cake shop on the way out of the old town is worth a mention - vanilla custard slices to die for! Only bad dish we had was in the restaurant in New Nessebar with the wall decoration of the walkway between the two parts of the town, same road as the Park Oasis Hotel - chicken in three cheese sauce was inedible and the tomatoes with the salad were like the Co-op's (or other British supermarkets), flavourless and unnecessary in a country where the produce is so good. Our friends who own the St George Hotel took us to the Crystal Hotel and Restaurant in Medovo, which is fairly near Sunny Beach, one evening - lovely garden and the food was very nice too. Proper Bulgarian atmosphere with not a KFC or MacDs in sight! Went into Bourgas one day and visted the Sand sculpture exhibition in the Sea Gardens - fantastic. All in all, a very relaxing holiday - even the sound of Cacao Beach across the bay was bearable! John R |
