Bulgaria to Build EUR 800,000 Clam Farm in Primorsko
Bulgaria will build its third clam farm near the southern seaside town of Primorsko, Darik News revealed. The EUR 800,000 farm will be build with SAPARD cash and should start producing clams in the spring of 2008, Ivaylo Rusinov, head of the company hired to build the farm explained. The first harvest will be about 150 tons, although the capacity of the farm should reach over 600 tons, he explained. Despite the expected increase in clam production, Bulgaria will not be able to sell its seafood in other EU country members, because the National Agency of Fisheries and Agriculture still hasn't taken the steps needed to classify the country's waters. This is one of the requirements for a country to be able to sell seafood to its EU neighbours, Rusinov explained. He said he hoped that this problem would be dealt with by next spring, but until this happens, local clam producers can only offer their production on the Bulgarian market.
