My boyfriend and I have just returned from a week at the Royal Bay Hotel. Arrived on Monday 7th Sept, at night in the pouring down rain so wasn't overly happy, but you can't control the weather! We soon perked up when we were given our room ... we stayed in Room 805 - on the top floor, it had a living area and bathroom and balcony downstairs (yes downstairs!) and a staircase leading to the bedroom & another bathroom upstairs!!! Brilliant sea view from the balcony - couldn't have asked for a better room. We thought the Hotel was lovely. VERY clean, the room was cleaned every day with fresh towels. The pool area was lovely, although they seemed to open the pool bar on quiet days and it was closed on busier days!! Think they just opened it as and when they had the staff, but it wasn't a problem - you could still get drinks from the lobby bar although the main barman at the lobby bar is NOT a happy soul! I don’t think I saw him crack a smile all week, but the rest of the staff were very friendly. The Hotel was right on the beach, although the beach near to the Royal Bay was quite rocky so probably better to go a bit further down towards the villas. We thought the food was good - it wasn't exceptional, but there was enough choice for us. Sometimes we had to clear a table to sit down to eat, but not a problem. I tried a bit of everything, as did my boyfriend and we never went hungry. The food wasn’t overly hot, but then it was kept warm under heat lamps so doesn’t stay piping hot! When the doors were open to outside there were a few flies knocking about but how can the Hotel stop them??! Bit annoying batting them away, but sit further away from the doors and they are less bother! Breakfast was served between 7:30 and 10:30, Lunch between 12:30 and 14:30 and Dinner between 18:00 and 21:30. Breakfast you could choose from cereal, fruit, yoghurt, pancakes (sometimes), breads, jams, butter, hams, cheeses, beans, French toast (eggy bread!), sausage, bacon, fried egg, hard boiled eggs, scrambled egg. Lunch had salads, meats, cheeses, cold pasta / rice dishes, bread, soup, a couple of kinds of meat (sausages, meatballs, chicken, pork, chicken livers, chops), potatoes, vegetables, rice, moussaka, stuffed vine leaves, stews etc…and chicken nuggets, chips and spaghetti for the children. Dinner was very similar to lunch. For dessert at lunch and dinner there was cake, fruit or ice cream. Drinks – water, coffee, tea, juice and red or white wine – you could take drinks in from the bar, but it was very difficult to pin someone down to order a drink once in there. The "snacks" during the day if you missed meal times were few and far between so that wasn't great - there was a little bar on the beach that did hot dogs and a bar in the Villa complex that did panini’s, but not much else (except crisps and things in the shops). Supposedly there was somewhere that did burgers and pizzas but we never found it!! It may have been closed as late in the season. There isn't much to do in the daytime at the Hotel at all, except lay by the pool etc... however there is a small arcade at the main reception (near the villas) and one in the Royal Park with pool tables (3 Lev a game) and arcade games. The Aqua Park was pretty good, a couple of slides were closed and the park itself was closed for most of the week because the weather wasn’t great – we eventually got to visit it on our last day. 5 Lev each for a sun lounger so not too bad. At night time the Royal Bay is VERY quiet, the bar is open until approx midnight, but there is NOTHING at all happening in the Hotel. The animation hall had a kids disco until 21:30 and then a show by the Bulgarian staff of some kind, which was watchable and was something to do! However, when this finished at about 22:30 that was it! The animation hall emptied and there was a nightclub open, but that was quite empty and played some horrible dance music!! So really not much to do in the evenings at all - some music in the Hotel bar or a screen showing music videos / football games etc... would have made all the difference. BUT, never mind, we had a few quiet drinks in the Hotel on some nights and if we wanted something more lively we went into Sunny Beach or to Paco's Bar just outside the complex. There is a taxi rank outside the main security gate and they have fixed prices – 20 Lev to Sunny Beach, 40 Lev to Nessebar, 80 Lev to the Airport. The bus runs on the hour every hour also, 3 Lev to Sunny Beach and 4 Lev to Nessebar. There is also a boat trip available from the main pier on the beach to Nessebar – this was 20 Lev. One of my main bugbears about this Hotel was nothing to do with the Hotel at all it was all the MOANING English people!!!!!!!!!!!!! My goodness, I’ve never heard anything like it …. Complaining about anything from the fact that the toaster doesn’t brown the toast (although it did make it hard and hot so not sure what the problem was?!), to the fact that there were no omelettes at breakfast (there was enough else to choose from). I really do think there’s no pleasing some people! We would return to the Royal Bay, but perhaps when we have a family as it was a little too quiet for us.
