Balchik Turns into Holywood Stage
The coastal town of Balchik has recently become a location for a new Hollywood production "Captain Drake" and turned into an Oriental bazaar. The role of the legendary war hero, captain and pirate Drake will be played by Adrian Paul, known to cinema lovers as a star of the Highlander. About 80 residents of Balchik have been selected for extras. They will play Arabs, Spaniards or English soldiers. The producers have chosen for a setting the former summer palace of Queen Marie of Romania. The residence with its beautiful garden will make an excellent decor for this pirate saga. During the filming, Adrian Paul will live in the former villa of Prince Nikolai. This is not Paul's first movie shot in Bulgaria. Only a year and a half ago he was in the country for the shooting of The Lost Colony. Apart from playing the central part, Paul is also a consultant and coordinator of the battle scenes. The role of Captain Sandoval, Drake's main adversary, will be played by the Bulgarian actor Assen Blatechki. "I think that it's a greater challenge for an actor to play a bad guy. The good guy is usually quite boring," commented Blatechki before The Standart.
